These compelling natural and man-made attributes furnish a frequently confirmed basis for a “sense of place”. Together, they operate as a bedrock for Tustin’s future, a practical covetable and charming community to live, work or visit.

Concentrated around an aggregation of historic buildings, Tustin Old Town dates back to the early 1880’s. Main Street traverses from Williams Street on the west to just a smidgeon beyond Newport Avenue on the east. Encompassed by the early establishments and buildings in Tustin were a blacksmith shop, a consolidated delicatessen/grocery store, a haven for proprietorships and feed store buildings and churches. The current museum is situated in a significant venerable structure which has housed many businesses over the years. Today, tourists are able to frequent over 120 years of Tustin’s storied past through a sidewalk tour that is less than 3 miles in length and was created to shine light on Tustin’s early history.

The early 1920’s escorted a new era of growth into the Tustin residential market. The city of Tustin constructed its own high school in the early 1920’s and the population was approaching 1,000 and the voters presumed it was time to incorporated. The concussion of World War II was intensified in the area by the creation of three military bases on nearby bean fields: the El Toro Marine Corps Air Station, The Navy’s Lighter-Than-Air Base, and the Santa Ana Army Air Base. Prior to 1960 there had been no real expansion in Tustin. City leaders deemed it responsible to construct top-not schools, freeways and post-war proprietorships that drew thousands of individuals. The “quick-decline” affliction, which obliterated area orange groves and ever increasing land values persuaded the orchardists to sell their land to developers. Before 1972, the population has increases to over 31,000.

Nearly all of the orchards are extinguished , now the neighboring landscape sprouts, Tustin condos, schools, and shopping centers instead of flora and natural surroundings and trees. But Main Street, though squeezed by components of momentum, will take you back through the years of Tustin’s evolution, confessing, like a tree’s rings, its drumfire years, its sparse times, its alternating tastes, and its progressive transmogrification decade by decade. Tustin History: Tustin was settled as a real estate venture by a Petaluma carriage maker, Columbus Tustin. He and his constituent, Stafford, bought over 1,190 acres of the Rancho Santiago de Santa Ana prior to 1870 which the old Spanish land grant was partitioned.

Around 1870, Tustin set about erecting “Tustin City” on his share of the parcel. He distributed the streets out amongst the wild mustard and sycamore trees that enclosed the area. He transported his wife and children and began selling lots and entrenched the school district and Tustin Post Office. When a multitude of people were unsuccessful in purchasing homesites, he offered lots complimentary to anyone who wanted to purchase a home (they had not yet grasped the concept of condominium complexes yet).  Prior to 1880, Tustin contended favorably with Spurgeon in Santa Ana for the southern terminus of the Southern-Pacific Railroad, by that sealing the destiny of his “city” – Tustin would endure as a meager town, and Santa Ana would become a city. Contemporary construction prior to 1890 included a bank, a horse-drawn tallyho, churches and a hotel. Many new Tustin residents built homes and planted groves. Tustin as always been recognized as a agricultural community. Groves of apricots and walnuts increasingly were recouped by Valencia orange. The new century brought many changes to the Tustin community. As early as 1904, there were two telephone companies. Electricity became accessible in 1906. Obviously, cars become so frequent that highway 101 coming through the city had to be paved.

Situated in the middle of Orange County, the closely approximated 1,620 acre previous Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Tustin was authorized in 1941 and played a crucial position in Navy and Marine Aviation for nearly a half-century. In 1991, a fragment of the previous MCAS Tustin was picked for termination, and additional allocations of the facility were chosen for closure in 1993., Prior to 1992, the city of Tustin was chosen as the Lead Agency, or Local Redevelopment Authority (LRA), and charged with assembling the appropriate reuse planning forms. In 1999, MCAS Tustin was formally padlocked , nearly 50 years subsequent to the base and its archetypal hangars arose from the farm fields of Orange County. After a long period of comprehensive study and public outreach, a reuse plan was ratified by the community in 1996 was subsequently enhanced and adopted also a zoning certificate entitled the MCAS Tustin Specific Plan and has subsequently augmented. The document combines comprehensive planning standards, policies, mandates and implementation strategies to direct the reuse and the development of the site.

The residents of Tustin are on the cusp of Mother Nature, with the majority of the Tustin condos close beautiful hiking and biking trails. There is also an extensive network of community parks in the city of Tustin. At Camino Real Park you will find a picnic shelter, basketball court, playground equipment and restrooms, and at Cedar Grove Park you will find a nature trail, interpretive displays, outdoor fitness equipment, amphitheatre, on-site parking and regional trail access. At Centennial Park you will find a sand volleyball pit, and a Citrus Ranch Park there is a hilltop gazebo, lemon tree orchard, and 8 picnic pods with barbeque areas. At Columbus Tustin Park there are 4 softball diamonds and 4 lighted tennis courts, and Frontier Park you will locate a Frisbee golf course. Heritage Park boasts a youth roller hockey rink and Laurel Glen Park has a quarter-mile walking/running path. Magnolia Tree Park, Peppertree Park has a horseshoe pit, Pine Tree Park has a portable Skate Park and Pioneer Road Park is pioneer-themed with a grass volleyball court. Tustin Sports Park and Victory Park are both local favorites for the residents of Tustin.
