As a Realtor are you still doing what you love – or are you just doing what you do?

A real estate professional will never be successful if they don’t like or maybe even dread what they do. They will never reach their full potential if it is a small challenge just to pull them into the office each morning. When a Realtor loses focus and is drifting, the majority of the time it simply boils down to a passion question: are you passionate about real estate or are you just doing this to make money? Passion for what you do is at the very center of your professional success and personal fulfillment. Passion will give you energy when others around you grow tired and decide to make a career change. Why do the best Realtors make it look so easy? They understand that passion allows them to play during the day while the other Realtors are seemingly working so hard.

The best Realtors understand that they can’t effectively lead and manage their client’s without passion. Passion will cause transactions to come together and passion can actually cover mistakes made by the Realtor. How does that happen? If a client knows that their Realtor deeply cares, they are genuinely concerned about the client’s well-being and success in the transaction, and the Realtor is delivering excellent service, the natural by-product is the client is going to be more forgiving if a mistake is made and the Realtor’s intentions were good – this is simply human nature. No Realtor is perfect out in the field, but if they are passionate and their client’s know it, their passion will cover up a multitude of errors.

It is not difficult to be a passionate Realtor: especially if you love what you do. Passion in its simplest form means “caring, caring deeply” about your client’s, and being in control When a Realtor is passionate, the natural by-products are; quality, excellence and impressed client’s. If you aren’t passionate then you should ask yourself, who are you serving, your client or yourself?

A Realtor doesn’t care how much their Broker knows until they know how much their Broker cares.

To be a superb Real Estate Broker you have to be a Connector not just a Climber…

Most Real Estate Brokers are simply looking out for themselves. They think that running a real estate company is a race. Their goal is to prove “themselves” and improve “their” ranking (Google, overall market share, total Realtor base), with little or no concern for the personal and professional progress of their Realtors. At the end of each month, week or day, the larger national and regional agencies can’t wait for the reports to come out so they can check out the stats and compare numbers with everyone else’s – on a macro level – quickly noting which real estate companies are ahead and behind, each trying to inch toward
the top, with concern for their Realtor’s in the field being an afterthought.

When a Real Estate Broker puts people before profit, the Broker is working under two major misconceptions: First, they think that their rankings automatically make them successful in the eyes of their Realtors. Second, they think that being one of the leaders in sales is a higher priority than connecting with their Realtors. If a Real Estate Broker is too busy trying to meet other owner or stakeholders expectations, and too preoccupied trying to get ahead to listen to their Realtors, they definitely aren’t connecting with their Realtors and they are losing touch of reality of what is really going on in the field.

That’s not to say that trying to be number one, or in the top ten in the real estate industry is all wrong. You can’t create progress within a company by staying on a plateau. Good real estate companies are naturally wired - it is built into their DNA, to climb to the top. They are aggressive. The initiate. The best Real Estate Brokers see opportunities and seek them before others do. The excellent Brokers are competitive and getting to the top is simply part of what they do. The question for Real Estate Brokers is not, should you try to get to the top? The question is, how should you try to get there? For a Real Estate Broker to attempt to get to the top of the industry without connecting with its Realtors at best allows it to lead its people without their allegiance. At worst it undermines their credibility and makes it a short-lived Broker.

Real Estate Brokers who climb over their Realtors to get to the top with quickly find the opportunity to look for new Realtors to work for them.

A Real Estate Company can either be a stepping stone or a stumbling block for their Realtors.

Realtors don’t want to work for incompetent Brokers.

No real estate professional wants to go to work for a less than excellent real estate company. Every Realtor wants to feel that their company can effectively manage the communities they work in, the vendors that support them, and the ongoing marketing that occurs across the regions that the organization serves in. The real estate company needs to inspire confidence, and they need to do that, not with charisma, but with confidence.

When a real estate firm becomes incompetent, they become a distraction to their team members, hampering their personal growth and wasting people’s energy. They prevent people from keeping the main thing the main thing. They lose the original vision and values of the organization and it is reflected in the behavior of its Realtors. If a real estate company has lost its vision, how can it expect its Realtors to maintain theirs? If the Realtors working for an incompetent real estate broker have a high level of skill, they will continually worry about their company messing things up (screwing up a vendor relationship, messing up a real estate contract, a flawed marketing campaign…). If on the other hand the Realtors don’t have a high level of skill or experience, they simply won’t know what to do. Either way, productivity declines, morale suffer, and positive momentum becomes impossible.

An incompetent real estate company will not lead, attract, nor continue to employ competent Realtors for long. The reason for this is that a real estate professional naturally wants to work for a real estate company which they feel is stronger than themselves. If the company was not stronger than them, they would be better off selling and buying real estate on their own, without paying the commission split to a real estate company. The bottom line is this: if a Realtor starts to believe that their broker is incompetent, they will quit and find someone else – somewhere else – who is competent who will help them reach their goals.
